Isaiah 9

Stay Humble

Isaiah predicts the coming of the Messiah, which gives them hope for better days to come. However, instead of humbling themselves, they became arrogant, saying that if they were cut down by war, they would build it back better than before. It almost reminds me of a campaign slogan, “Build Back Better,” which we’ve heard in recent years.

The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycomores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars. Isaiah 9:10

Because of their haughtiness, spitting in the eye of God, He showed them who is boss by sending other nations, the Syrians and Philistines, to cut them down.

For the people turneth not unto him that smiteth them, neither do they seek the LORD of hosts. Therefore the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day. Isaiah 9:13-14

It’s a good idea for us to stay humble in the face of adversity. We tend to act like Judah and use our words to lash out, but it’s better for us if we sit back and watch as our enemies devour themselves and not lift a finger in retaliation, and allow God to war against our enemies on our behalf.
