Miracles Of Jesus: 11

Jesus Raises a Widow's Son

Luke is the only gospel to record Jesus raising a widow's son back to life. According to the scripture, this was a man, not a small child. Jesus was outside the city when a funeral procession with mourners and others was taking this man out to be buried. He had compassion on the mother, as this was her only son, and because she was also a widow. During that time, she likely would have had a hard life without anyone to help her in her old age. Our compassionate Savior touched the coffin or plank they were carrying the man on, and he came back to life.

And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.

Today, if nothing else, remember how compassionate Jesus is and how he understands our trouble. We were never promised an easy life, far from it, but those who know and love Jesus are assured of eternal life with him, which is well worth any trouble we might face because of our faith. Jesus holds the power of life and death in his hands, and this day, he chose to show the people his power. Fear gripped them because only God has that kind of power, and they knew He was standing before them in the person of Jesus.

Pictured is where the Apostle Paul was buried. He was beheaded by Nero in Rome, but taken outside the city to be buried. Of course, there is now a Catholic Church there.

Miracles Of Jesus: 10

Jesus Heals A Man With A Withered Hand On The Sabbath

And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days. Matthew 12:11-12

Likely, you have witnessed the actions of "Pharisees" in your church; if not, you've probably not been in church much. People like to think they know what God means by specific laws. However, Jesus came and gave a common-sense interpretation of those laws in the Sermon on the Mount, and then he lived them while performing miracles during his time on the earth. A note in the Matthew Henry Commentary says:

"It is no new thing for the most harmless and innocent actions of Christ's disciples to be evil spoken of, and reflected upon as unlawful, especially by those who are zealous for their own inventions and impositions."

Another point made by Matthew Henry:

"Satan gains this point, if, by sowing discord among brethren, he prevail to drive them, or any of them, from the synagogue, and the communion of the faithful."

Some people use God's word as a weapon, and the entire meaning is lost because of their ill intentions. The point is, we shouldn't argue about things we aren't 100% sure of; debate is one thing, but to be rigid and think you are the only one who is right is doing a disservice to the faith. Not having the mind of Christ while debating your point only shows outsiders that we are not in sync in our beliefs.

Even though the Bible is God-breathed, in my opinion, if you are trying to make a point using the Bible as the interpreter, make sure you define your point using multiple writers so that particular point cannot be dismissed by the person you are debating. Though it is all God's word, I don't use Paul to interpret Paul. Set your point aside until you have clarity and can find your answer in other similar scriptures.

Another point that is clear from this story: We often like to think that the flesh is meaningless, but if it didn't mean something to God, why would Jesus bother to heal people? The Lord cares about people, and so should we.

Miracles Of Jesus: 9

Jesus Heals a Paralytic Whose Friends Lowered Him From The Roof

You have probably heard the story of the paralytic man whose friends opened up a roof and lowered him down before Jesus because the crowd was so big they couldn’t maneuver through it. What incredible faith they had to believe Jesus would heal him. Today, I will focus on Jesus forgiving that man’s sins, the root cause of his paralysis. Most people don’t want to believe that their sin could be a cause of their health problems. I know not all health problems are caused by personal sin, but some are caused by the evil in this world that is bent on harm or depopulation. However, we must consider why Jesus would even say to the man, “your sins are forgiven,” if it wasn’t sin that caused his paralysis. The point of telling you this is that if you have a sin that you haven’t repented of, it may be a good idea to start there before asking for healing. Jesus’ forgiveness is more important than recovering from sickness because it is eternal. This world is only temporary, so it’s more important that we seek Jesus and his forgiveness than it is to be healed of our infirmities. Sometimes we get both forgiveness and healing; if we only get forgiveness, we should be grateful for it. Don’t stop asking for your healing; he might get tired of hearing from you and heal you just to shut you up.

Those Pharisees who had negative thoughts against Jesus got called out in front of everyone and were probably embarrassed because it was their thoughts that pointed out Jesus as God. Another lesson from this portion of scripture is to watch your thoughts; Jesus hears them.

And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? Luke 5:20-21

Miracles Of Jesus: 8

Jesus Heals a Centurion's Servant

The story of the Centurion and his servant is found in Matthew 8 and Luke 7. The Roman Centurion had a servant who was paralyzed and in pain. He must have been a caring man to humble himself to go to Jesus and ask him to heal his servant. Jesus was on his way when the Centurion met him, saying he was unworthy for him to come into his home, and trusted him to heal the man from a distance.

When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. Matthew 8:10

He understood who Jesus was, his authority to command the angels and the elements, and that he had power over everything, and because of that, he could heal his servant, even if it was from a distance.

I feel most connected to this Centurion because we don't have Jesus in the flesh to heal us, but we know he can, even from a distance. What can we do to increase our faith? Pray for everything, and if you can't remember your prayers, write them down so you can refer back and see what God is doing. It may be a culmination of small wins, and those prayers answered for us that slowly but surely increase our faith and show us God's hand in our lives. As for the end of this story, at that very moment when Jesus gave the word, the servant was healed, and the Centurion was able to prove it by asking those with the paralytic man the time it happened.

Miracles Of Jesus: 7

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

The cleansing of the leper was recorded in all three of the Synoptic Gospels. This miracle was significant in Jesus' testimony and served as a nod to his deity, because only God could cure leprosy. When Jesus told the leper to show the priest and make the offering required by Moses, it wasn't only to prove the leper was clean, but also to prove that Jesus was the Messiah and God. The priest who examined the leper knew the truth about who Jesus was and couldn't deny it since it was only God who could cure this disease.

There was something significant about the way the leper asked Jesus to heal him, "If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean." He did not doubt that Jesus could heal him, but he wasn't sure whether Jesus would be willing, but he was.

If you have ever wondered why Jesus could touch a person with leprosy, it's because he wasn't worried about it infecting him. After all, leprosy represented sin, and sin didn't stick to Jesus, so he could touch him without fear of contracting that disease.

How can this help us in our daily lives? It is significant in proving that the One we follow had evidence of his deity to those who counted in that day, which is also proof for us. We trust him because the Holy Spirit brought us to him, but Jesus's actions validate the truth to help us convince others to trust him.

And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him. And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. Luke 5:13-14

Miracles Of Jesus: 6

First Miraculous Catch of Fish at Lake Gennesaret

Backtracking a little in the Steps of Jesus, because the chronological order wasn’t clear when I started this journey. When we read straight through the gospels, it would seem that Jesus called his disciples first, but we read of several before any apostles were called to follow him. Jesus was passing by Lake Gennesaret when he saw two empty ships; the fishermen were repairing their nets. He entered Peter’s boat, then asked him if he would set out away from shore so he could preach to the crowd that had gathered. When he was finished teaching, he told Peter to put out his nets again. Peter, who was probably tired from his day, hesitated because they hadn’t been successful earlier. However, because Jesus asked, he complied. When his nets were nearly full and bursting at the seams, he called for others to help. When they were done, Peter fell at Jesus’s knees and said, “Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him. Luke 5:10-11

There is so much more to this story than the miracle of the fish. These men were convinced that Jesus was someone special because they had seen something incredible at his hands. We have seen many things ourselves, even though they may not be the kind of miracles they saw back then, but we can learn from our Bible, which is God-breathed, know that what we read is infallible truth, and trust it. Using that information and seeing that they left everything to follow Jesus, we need to prioritize our lives, with him at the forefront of everything. Start your day with Jesus, live your day for him, and end your day with him on your mind and love in your heart for the truth of who he is. You will still have trials, but because of Jesus, you will be able to handle them better and have a stronger reason to press on.

Miracles Of Jesus

Jesus Heals Many

When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. Matthew 8:16-17

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. Isaiah 53:4

After healing Peter's mother-in-law, the people brought many who were sick or possessed, and Jesus healed them all. Can you imagine living near Jesus in that day and having a medical issue? I want a touch from him today for a childhood illness that has reappeared. I know many are dealing with infirmities that medical doctors seem unable or unwilling to find cures for. Jesus' return seems close, and I believe that when we are given our glorified bodies, they won't be stricken by disease, and we will feel light and unencumbered by the heaviness like we feel now. We have so much to look forward to in the everlasting. While we are here and living in the harshness of the earth, don't give up on life; God has given it to us for a reason. Though we may not be privy to why, we can be sure His plan is purposeful. There are so many details that have led us to where we are now, and if you hadn't been in place, others' lives might look different. Always be prepared to be called home to Jesus, but live your life knowing he has a plan and a purpose for you.
