God's Omnipresence

Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD. Jeremiah 23:24

Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. Psalms 139:7-8

You might wonder, if God is everywhere and with me all the time, why do I experience pain and heartache? A.W. Tozer put it this way, “As a child may cry out in pain even when sheltered in its mother’s arms, so a Christian may sometimes know what it is to suffer even in the conscious presence of God.” Not only that, but He knows and sees what you are doing and what others are doing to you, so sins cannot be hid from Him. Knowing that gives me comfort because countless people sin against us, and God knows, and they will receive His retribution and due time. Loneliness shouldn’t be a thing, but it is. It’s not about being alone, because we are never alone; it’s about missing human contact and sometimes needing the comfort of others with skin on. However, if you cry out to Him when you are lonely, I assure you He will comfort you with His presence or send a human to console you.

I’ll never forget a time well after my first husband passed away and the house was empty of people except for my five-year-old son; loneliness hit me like a ton of bricks, and I found myself face down on the floor experiencing the deepest isolation I had ever faced, crying out to God for help when, like clockwork and God’s timing, someone knocked on the door. It was my neighbor. She told me about Richard, my now husband. It took me a few times passing his hardware store before I decided to visit, but once I finally did, my loneliness was over. That was 30 years ago, and I haven’t been lonely since. God hears you and sees, and you can expect that He will show you who He is when the time is right because He is always with you.

The Divine Transcendence

Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. Isaiah 6:5

Transcendence refers to the aspect of God's nature and power which is wholly independent of the material universe, beyond all physical laws.

Lord of all being, throned afar,
They glory flames from sun and star;
Center and soul of every sphere,
Yet to each loving heart how near!

Lord of all life, below, above,
Whose light is truth, whose warmth is love,
Before Thy ever-blazing throne
We ask no luster of our own.

Oliver Wendell Holmes

As Christ-followers, I feel we have a reverence for the Almighty that exceeds what the natural man can comprehend because we have the Holy Spirit within us to help keep our minds focused on His extraordinary existence. Mere words cannot explain Him. When Isaiah experienced God’s presence, he realized his state of being was filthy. When Daniel saw God, he positioned his body close to the ground. And when a being touched him, he only got up on his hands and knees.

Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me: for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength. Daniel 10:8

When Moses met with God on the mountain, the people couldn’t even touch the base of the mountain for fear of dying. After this study of God’s divine transcendence, I realized that we are not reverent and fearful enough of God. He is extraordinary, and we have never experienced Him in such a way to understand His transcendence and how different we are from Him. Until we have a close encounter with Him, as Daniel, Moses, Isaiah, and other characters in the Bible did, we may not fully understand His majesty.

The Omnipotence of God

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Romans 1:20

Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth. Isaiah 40:26

Sometimes we look at people and define God and His power by the strength we see in man. Indeed, God sometimes uses man to manifest His power, but man’s power is pale in comparison to God’s. Even still, when God gives man power, that power still belongs to Him. Let’s say your finances are shaky, which nowadays everyone feels the pinch of the economy, and you ask God to help you. A human comes along and gives you enough money to pay your bills and get something to eat. You might think that it was man who helped you, but God used that human to show you His power to answer your prayer. However, that is only the human representation of God’s power. Our God, in His amazing omnipotence, created the heavens and the earth with only His words and gave life to man by His breath. We can only understand how powerful God is through our human comprehension, but if we look at all He has done that can be seen with our eyes, and understand that what we see barely scratches the surface, and know that there is more to His power, then maybe we will stand in awe of Him and His omnipotence.

The Wisdom of God

Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his: And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding: He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him. Daniel 2:20-2:22

Can you even believe and have faith in God if you don’t think He is altogether wise? The Creator of all with incomprehensible wisdom is more than our finite minds can understand. No matter how things look or how dismal this world seems, God sees the whole picture and works things out for our good. If you are going through a rough patch in your life, remember, it is temporary, and God is working out the details because He knows how to arrange things in our favor. Don’t give up. It takes a God with all wisdom to juggle each of our lives so that what we do affects the lives of others. He guides our steps, and if we listen intently and do what’s right in His eyes, we will not only hasten our good, but help bring about the good in others. Isn’t that mind-blowing? Not only can He work things out for our best, but He handles the minute details that guide us so that things in the lives of others also work out for their best.

And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them. Isaiah 42:16

The Divine Omniscience

Who hath directed the Spirit of the LORD, or being his counsellor hath taught him? With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding? Isaiah 40:13-14

For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Romans 11:34

If you don’t think that God can see the actions of His children, then you are sadly mistaken. He knows everything and cannot be taught anything. If a person is a blatant sinner and no longer useful to God, He will expose them and remove them from their position. It may not be in our timing, but He will spotlight that person and their sins to stop them from harming others. If, out of revenge, you try to do that yourself, you will be the one who falls. Throughout the years, we have seen televangelists fall and their corruption exposed, and even in our local church, I’ve seen Him remove people all the way down to a student of the word for going against His chosen; God doesn’t play. I’ve heard it said, “There is no discernment in this church.” I beg to differ. The person who said that was the one without discernment. God gives people discernment when they need it if it’s not one of their gifts of the Spirit. One time, God removed nearly half the people from our church, which was a lot of people, and God was so good through that transition that even the finances didn’t budge, and our church added many new members. The reason they gave for leaving was lame and was stirred up by someone who wanted to burn down everything in their path before leaving. Don’t try to tell God anything because He knows everything that has happened in our past and what will happen in our future. If someone tries to collapse or destroy something that belongs to Him, they will be the ones who see His vengeance and feel the pain of exposure. The point is not to seek your own revenge; it will only backfire. God sees all and knows all: you cannot surprise Him, and if it’s meant to be, correction will happen through Him and by Him.

The Immutability of God

For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. Malachi 3:6

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. James 1:17

Have you ever had to deal with someone around whom you had to walk on eggshells? You never know what their mood is or whether they will be in a rage. Such a person can cause you trauma and anxiety, which, if it happened in childhood, would be something later in life that you would have to overcome. Nothing upsets your nervous system quite like a psychotic person who doesn’t regulate their own actions or reactions. Humans are like that. However, God is not. We can count on Him always being the same, never in a bad mood, and always delighted by us, opening His arms to welcome us and invite us to spend quality time with Him. When all others fail us, causing us emotional harm, He will be the One who soothes and comforts us in our time of pain.

Imagine being around someone who regulates their emotions, is stable, and handles what life throws at them with poise. We all need to endeavor to be like that, to embody the fruits of the Spirit and to change into the likeness of Jesus.

God's Infinitude

Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Psalms 51:11

“At the contemplation and utterance of His majesty all eloquence is rightly dumb, all mental effort is feeble. For God is greater than mind itself. His greatness cannot be conceived.” Novatian

This study is probably the hardest that I have endeavored to tackle. Even with a well-known writer and preacher, A.W. Tozer, using his best words to describe God’s awesomeness and greatness, it is still hard to comprehend. In my previous post, I covered what I understood of God's eternity, but infinity refers to the expanse of how He covers the entire earth, and if there are other realms beyond earth, He covers those, too. As a personal way to understand Him, when you pray or have a conversation with Him, He can hold you intimately while also doing the same for millions of others who are calling on Him at the same time; He’s unfathomable. Who are we to try to understand God? We cannot even understand the minds of other human beings. You might know them and love them, but you cannot truly know what’s going on in their minds or how they even exist. Not only that, we don’t even know ourselves, but do you know who does? The Almighty God.

I was moving furniture around and noticed a copper end table that I had found by a dumpster. If it had been in a store, I would have bought it. All it needed was a glass top. It was fashioned to look like mangrove roots. I had seen such a sculpture in a restaurant many years ago, loved it, and wanted something like it. Then it shows up by this dumpster! How does that just happen? God knows and loves each of us infinitely more than we know or love ourselves, and wants to give us the desires of our hearts. He remembers our desires even when we don't. These things are not just coincidences; He does the same for you, but you must take notice of them and offer Him praise and thanksgiving. Your appreciation will go far, and you will see Him surprise you with even more.
