Knowledge of the Holy

The Holiness of God

It wasn’t until Isaiah was in the presence of God that he realized how filthy he was.

Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. Isaiah 6:5

In the verses before this one he describes what he saw in the throne room of God.

In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Isaiah 6:1

It is this very verse that I use to imagine being in God’s presence when I’m having trouble sleeping. We are so small compared to God that I imagine myself in one of the folds of His robe where it is fluffy and comforting. However, that’s my initial reaction because I wasn’t truly in God’s presence as Isaiah was. He realized how unholy he was when he met the Most Holy. It caused him to see himself in the true light, even though he was a prophet of God and was allowed to see Him.

What does holy mean? Exactly the way it sounds, whole. God is complete which makes us incomplete. Will we ever be complete; not likely, but we have our Savior who makes us whole, and he is all we need to be allowed in the presence of God without being destroyed.

Why is God wrathful?

“God’s wrath is His utter intolerance of whatever degrades and destroys. He hates iniquity as a mother hates the polio that takes the life of her child.” A.W. Tozer

Doesn’t that make sense? Whatever degrades us keeps us from being holy, and because God loves us, He wants us to be whole. We are closer than ever to experiencing the destruction of evil; it may happen in our lifetime. Wait for it; it will surely come and not delay.

For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. Habakkuk 2:3

The Love of God

The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. Zephaniah 3:17

As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love. Song of Solomon 2:3-4

You’ve heard it said that God is love, and He is, but He is more than that. Love is only one of His attributes; however, it is one of His attributes that we receive a comforting feeling from, especially when fear grips us. We can count on Him to wrap us in His loving arms and to console us with His love. God’s love is much more than I can imagine, but when I try to picture it, the words of Zephaniah seem to be what I think about because the description is absolutely beautiful and breathtaking. Can you see it? Though we don’t know exactly what God looks like, we can feel Him when He sings over us and can even picture a banner over us that says “Love.” The most compelling thought is about what Jesus did for us on the cross; greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Jesus is love perfected.

Yes, God is more than just love, but I can’t help but be drawn to this attribute most of all. I could have written this devotion solely from scripture, and you probably would have gotten a more accurate picture. His love for us is more than words can describe; it’s emotional, but concrete, and we can count on it never ending, or getting bigger because it’s always existed in Him in its fullest. That in itself is comforting.

If you need a little more comfort in this day and age and feel like something dreadful is coming upon us, rest easy in the following words:

Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. 1 John 4:17-18

The Grace of God

For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. John 1:17

Grace is free and unmerited love and reconciliation with God.

Grace is for the saved. The unsaved may receive God’s mercy for a time, but only His children receive grace. To receive grace, you must accept Jesus as your Savior; there is no other way.

Moses is an example of a form of God’s grace: Moses wasn’t allowed to see God; when he passed by him while he was in the cleft of the rock, he only saw His back. He also wasn’t allowed to enter the promised land; he died just outside of it. However, during the transfiguration, Moses saw God’s face through Jesus Christ our Lord, and had entered the promised land because they were in Jerusalem at that time. A lot of time may have passed, but God still answered his prayer and told him yes.

We sin daily, maybe not egregiously, but in our thoughts, and it is through the grace of God that He doesn’t consume us, and by His grace, He willingly sacrificed Himself to cover our known and unknown sins.

The Mercy of God

O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. Psalms 136:1

Don't get discouraged if you see God show mercy to worldly people and grant them a reprieve from the consequences of their actions. It is only for the here-and-now. They may become complacent, thinking they are okay with God, but His mercy ends here on earth. Then God shows us mercy by taking them out of this world and sending them to the next realm, where they will get what they deserve. How sad would it be if we had to live amidst the children of the devil forever?

For us, those who trust in Him, He shows His mercy daily. Think about it, how many times a day do you say, "thank God?" It is in those moments that you realize how merciful He is; so much so, you can't help but reach out and thank Him. He is merciful to us by giving us something to look forward to when He removes the wicked from this world and gives us peace and happiness living with Him and among those who are also devoted to Him. It is because of the sweetness of His mercy that we aren't consumed.

And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him. Isaiah 30:18

The Justice of God

And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him. Isaiah 30:18

For I the LORD love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. Isaiah 61:8

We know from this study, The Knowledge of the Holy, that God knows all, sees all, is everywhere all at once, and is all-powerful. What can a human do that would equal the justice of God? He may use us as a tool to render justice, but for us, it will be within the parameters of His law. However, you will likely see God’s justice without participating.

God is not like anything other than Himself. Gold is always gold and can only be gold. God, though He has many attributes, can only be Himself, and if any being, human or not, acts in such a way that goes against who He is or how He wants them to behave, He will exact justice. When it comes to vengeance, allow the pieces to fall where they may because God’s justice is far superior to our own.

The Goodness of God

O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. Psalms 34:8

We live in such a sinful world that it is hard to fathom the meaning of “good.” No human is good; though we strive to be good by aspiring to be like Jesus, however, at any given moment, we are able and will revert to our previous nature. How do you react when someone cuts you off in traffic and nearly causes you to wreck? God is always good and never loses His cool. If we face retribution, it’s because of something we did to ourselves, not something God did.

Here is something that you’ve probably not considered: your lack of faith is a reflection on God. Why don’t we trust Him? We are hard-headed know-it-alls, and think we have to answer for everything, but really, we should know the truth about ourselves that we haven’t got a clue about how good God is, or even what it means to be good. So our homework for today and for the rest of your life is to grow your faith in God and trust that He has your life in His hands because only He is good.

The Faithfulness of God

Even though we may separate God's attributes to understand Him, each one works together in divine harmony to explain an otherwise unexplainable being. If we speak of God as only love, we forget that He is also just, and that those who go against Him will face the consequences of their actions.

God is faithful, so we can be assured that He keeps His promises. Much of what we see happening today is a part of Him fulfilling His promises. The ungodly and wicked are feeling the walls closing in on them, and they are lashing out, trying to make us feel like we are the ones who will receive His retribution, but we know from the scriptures that it's not us who will face God's wrath, but them.

For peace of mind, know that we are encapsulated in God's hands through Jesus Christ our Lord and can rest assured that even if a man or being harms our body, it cannot harm our soul. Jesus said, "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell."

It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. Lamentations 3:22-24

God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Corinthians 1:9
