Isaiah 13

A Warning About The Judgment of Babylon

There is some debate about whether this prophecy of Isaiah, about Babylon being destroyed, was during the destruction of Babylon in 539 BC or whether it is its destruction at the end of the end, The Day of the Lord. However, after reading Matthew Henry’s commentary, I tend to think we are still waiting for it to happen, since he uses the future tense in his writing, as if it hasn’t happened yet. What is notable is that when Babylon was destroyed, it was not complete annihilation during the 539 BC destruction, as God instructed. Isaiah’s prophecy calls for every sinner to be destroyed, and we should be careful not to align with them because we will also be destroyed.

Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. Isaiah 13:9

Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that is joined unto them shall fall by the sword. Isaiah 13:15

Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it. Isaiah 13:17

Guess who the Medes are? Iran. The rest of the Biblical text is too gruesome for social media, and I’m sure it wouldn’t be allowed; it’s that bad! If this is a future event, what is to come is awful. When the word of God tells us to “come out from among them,” He isn’t kidding. You must not be aligned with sinful people. We must get this right, or we will suffer as sinners. Seek Jesus now, while he can be found.

Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 2 Corinthians 6:17

Isaiah 12

The Lord Is My Strength and My Song

One thing is clear about the people used by God in scripture: they praised and worshipped Him with songs. Isaiah, who received vast amounts of information from God through the Holy Spirit, felt compelled to share with us his worship of Him in Isaiah 12, giving us a glimpse of how he opened himself to receive downloads from Him. We can be used by God just as Isaiah was. The writers of the Bible were no more precious than you or I, but God used them as instruments to convey His truths and offer a look into who He is. There are a few key components to hearing God’s voice, but the main one is to submit your entire life to Him. We must also reverently display our passion and love for Him, search the scriptures to get to know Him, and sing praises to Him. For example, if your prayers aren’t being answered, you might worship Him with a song. In the Old Testament, before battles, God would send the praise team out first, and the enemy would buckle. Whatever you sing, make sure you sing it with the Creator in mind. Remember, Satan was the song leader in heaven, and he now lives here on earth with us and is the song leader here. Some of the songs he writes now are what we sing every day, so be mindful of who you are singing to because Satan would love nothing more than for you to worship him and call him god.

Sing unto the LORD; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth. Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee. Isaiah 12:5-6

Isaiah 11

Jesus, The Righteous Branch

It doesn't matter where we are in the biblical timeline; the only thing that matters is Jesus. Even in the Old Testament, before Jesus' appearance, his coming into the world was predicted and expected. What does matter is that we know him and have a relationship with him. We must be careful not to allow our worldly involvement to hinder us from seeking him. We have to make our way in this world, but with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can keep our attention on Jesus to make it through. Swords are drawn daily, and we must fight the enemy because he comes after us with a vengeance, but because of our faith in Jesus, the enemy can easily be conquered by simply saying, "Get behind me, Satan!"

Sometimes I post things and make you think being a Christian is easy; it's not, and can be daunting and stressful if you let it. When your life becomes trying, and your hope seems to be failing, remember to reach out to Jesus, say a prayer under your breath, especially when being challenged, and watch him de-escalate your challenger quickly. This practice does a world of good for your emotions. Try doing it the next time the enemy is in your face and watch as Jesus subdues them.

But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. Isaiah 11:4

Isaiah 10

God Corrects His Own and Then Sets the Enemy Straight

God will use other nations to set His people on the right path. In Isaiah, God used Assyria to bring His people back into compliance, but then punished them for invading them; that’s one of the ways God works. It seems harsh, but when His people turn away from doing the right thing and treating His people fairly and respectfully, He will find ways to set them straight. Many times, God will use invading countries as tools to punish those who have turned their backs on Him and are going in their own direction without a care. We see this happen time and time again. It’s as though the enemy has hardened the people’s hearts so much that they can’t see the pattern. People mistreat Christians and think they can get away with it, but God doesn’t permit it. I’m starting to see that Christians mistreating other Christians is not a thing. What we are seeing is disguises; Christians in name only, not the truly committed. Remember Judas? He looked like a disciple, but there were signs the disciples missed, and Jesus saw right through it. He wasn’t counted among Jesus’s, because Jesus himself told us that he never lost one.

Satan has infiltrated the Church, and it’s not until God chooses to reveal them that we will see the truth of who these invaders are. Our churches are like tiny countries within a country, so when God removes these invaders from your church, you will feel initially disheartened, but then a sense of relief, and getting back to being “The Church” becomes much easier. Here is another point: you will know once these people leave that they were a tool of Satan because they cannot let it go and move on with their lives; they have to keep involving themselves instead of letting go; they cannot stand to see that the church is better off without them. For those in churches that have experienced people leaving their church, be grateful that God intervened on your behalf and removed the people that were causing problems that you probably didn’t even know about, and those not truly adhering to God’s commands. Hopefully, God will one day allow them to see the truth of their involvement in the evil they committed, change their hearts, and return to the Church as true followers of Christ.

And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing. Isaiah 10:27

Isaiah 9

Stay Humble

Isaiah predicts the coming of the Messiah, which gives them hope for better days to come. However, instead of humbling themselves, they became arrogant, saying that if they were cut down by war, they would build it back better than before. It almost reminds me of a campaign slogan, “Build Back Better,” which we’ve heard in recent years.

The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycomores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars. Isaiah 9:10

Because of their haughtiness, spitting in the eye of God, He showed them who is boss by sending other nations, the Syrians and Philistines, to cut them down.

For the people turneth not unto him that smiteth them, neither do they seek the LORD of hosts. Therefore the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day. Isaiah 9:13-14

It’s a good idea for us to stay humble in the face of adversity. We tend to act like Judah and use our words to lash out, but it’s better for us if we sit back and watch as our enemies devour themselves and not lift a finger in retaliation, and allow God to war against our enemies on our behalf.

Isaiah 8

Fear God, Not People

God instructed Isaiah to name his son Mahershalalhashbaz as a prophecy and the title of the book he was to write. God wanted it plainly written so everyone could understand it. He did as God told him, and when his son was born to his wife, he called her a prophetess and named his son Mahershalalhashbaz, meaning "things will happen quickly." Part of the prophecy said they would be taken by Assyria quickly, before Mahershalalhashbaz could say "mom and dad," before he was one or two.

For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My father, and my mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria. Isaiah 8:4

Here is what is important for us to understand: God told Isaiah not to walk in the ways of the people and not to let fear grip him. Just as God tells us not to fear the enemy, in this passage of scripture, He instructs Isaiah to praise, worship, and honor God as a way to overcome our fear and to fear God rather than the enemy.

Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offense to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken. Isaiah 8:13-15

The world is shaky right now, but rather than wringing our hands and worrying about what is happening, lift your face toward heaven, raise your hands, reach up to God, and submit your life to Him, because you are not the object of his recompense; it is the enemy that should fear, not you.

Isaiah 7

God told Isaiah to go to King Ahaz, an evil king, and take his son, Shearjashub, which means "the remnant shall return," with him to warn the king that Syria and Ephriam have taken evil counsel to go against Judah and wage war against it. He took his son because, in that time, children had prophetic names, and Shearjashub was a prophecy for Ahaz. This simplified story is only to give you a picture of what was happening during that time; what I want to spotlight is something Ahaz said, and many people today think the same way.

Moreover the LORD spake again unto Ahaz, saying, Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD. Isaiah 7:10-12

What Ahaz said was a cop-out and would not ask God for help because he depended on the Assyrians and their gods and didn't want to be beholden to God and didn't want to believe in Him. Isaiah includes a strange but important prediction anyway, that seems out of place, that the Messiah would come from his line. However, things would not go well for them.

And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good. Isaiah 7:13-15

The main point that I wanted to make is to ask God for anything. He told Ahaz to ask Him for a sign, but he refused. How many of us think we can handle things on our own and suffer because we failed to ask God to help us? Also, if we don't ask, and God still helps us because He loves us, we will think we handled things ourselves instead of giving God the glory for his intervention. We must talk to God; He's big enough to help all of us simultaneously, and it doesn't weary Him to hear from us and intercede on our behalf.
