Get married if you want to be married; otherwise, stay single. It’s better to marry than to burn with passion. There are problems associated with marriage. One problem is devotion to God and serving Him. Married people tend to concern themselves with worldly things to please their mates. Paul thought everyone should stay unmarried to devote all their time to God in this short life. However, he knew that people were passionate and may want to release that passion, so choosing a mate was not wrong, however unwise it may seem. This chapter directly coincides with chapter 6, where Paul instructs the church at Corinth not to pollute their bodies by fornication. Chapter 7 of his letter shows them the options and explains how marriage or singleness should be handled. We would do ourselves good to follow his instructions, especially since it is included in God’s scriptures.
Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. 1 Corinthians 7:2
But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn. 1 Corinthians 7:9
