Knowledge of the Holy

The Holiness of God

It wasn’t until Isaiah was in the presence of God that he realized how filthy he was.

Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. Isaiah 6:5

In the verses before this one he describes what he saw in the throne room of God.

In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Isaiah 6:1

It is this very verse that I use to imagine being in God’s presence when I’m having trouble sleeping. We are so small compared to God that I imagine myself in one of the folds of His robe where it is fluffy and comforting. However, that’s my initial reaction because I wasn’t truly in God’s presence as Isaiah was. He realized how unholy he was when he met the Most Holy. It caused him to see himself in the true light, even though he was a prophet of God and was allowed to see Him.

What does holy mean? Exactly the way it sounds, whole. God is complete which makes us incomplete. Will we ever be complete; not likely, but we have our Savior who makes us whole, and he is all we need to be allowed in the presence of God without being destroyed.

Why is God wrathful?

“God’s wrath is His utter intolerance of whatever degrades and destroys. He hates iniquity as a mother hates the polio that takes the life of her child.” A.W. Tozer

Doesn’t that make sense? Whatever degrades us keeps us from being holy, and because God loves us, He wants us to be whole. We are closer than ever to experiencing the destruction of evil; it may happen in our lifetime. Wait for it; it will surely come and not delay.

For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. Habakkuk 2:3
