The Weapon of Prayer
The Necessity of Praying Men
“The Holy Spirit never descends upon prayerless men. He never fills them, He never empowers them. There is nothing whatever in common between the Spirit of God and men who do not pray. The Spirit dwells only in a prayer atmosphere.” E.M. Bounds
I’m not sure if what he says is completely true, but it certainly makes you think. However, it does make sense that if you are not reaching out to God in prayer and cultivating a relationship with him, you may not even have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. How can you have a relationship with someone you do not talk to? Jesus was our example; he prayed and kept up his relationship with the Father while he existed on earth. Jesus promised that if you love him and keep his commandments, he will give you the Holy Spirit to be with you forever. You may not have to pray to become saved, but the Holy Spirit is the one who prompts you to pray, and praying is one of the proofs of your salvation, and you only get him if you are saved.
If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; John 14:15-16
I sorted out the words of Mr. Bounds for you today and dug into the scriptures to confirm whether they were true or not, and it seems like he took some liberty and went slightly beyond the scriptures. Even though what he said seems trustworthy, we must verify what he and others say, and make sure their words are backed by scripture. The only way to do that is to diligently sort through the scriptures and extract the truth from God’s Word.
