When Jesus took the throne in his kingdom, the righteous rejoiced! Remember, he is now seated at the right hand of the Father. However, those subjected to his judgment were overwhelmed by the lightning, and the hills melted like wax! I believe Psalms 97 was a prophecy pointing to the destruction of the temple and of Jerusalem around 70 AD. In the writings of Josephus, a Jewish historian, in his book The War of the Jews, book 6, chapter 5, he described the fires destroying the people and the cries of those who were nearly dead from famine after being seized and tortured by the Romans, like the hills were melting or did the hills actually melt? Although he was not a Christian, he describes much of what Jesus warned his followers about. The tribulation during that time was unfathomable and nothing like that had ever happened before. One thing to note: before all of this happened, the Christians saw the signs given to them, and they fled Jerusalem to Pella, Perea. There was no time to waste; they had to leave quickly. God had preserved those who loved Jesus, and I expect that He will do that again. Rejoice in the Lord and give thanks for his holiness.

His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled. The hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth. The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory. Psalms 97:4-6
