Luke is the only gospel to record Jesus raising a widow's son back to life. According to the scripture, this was a man, not a small child. Jesus was outside the city when a funeral procession with mourners and others was taking this man out to be buried. He had compassion on the mother, as this was her only son, and because she was also a widow. During that time, she likely would have had a hard life without anyone to help her in her old age. Our compassionate Savior touched the coffin or plank they were carrying the man on, and he came back to life.
And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.
Today, if nothing else, remember how compassionate Jesus is and how he understands our trouble. We were never promised an easy life, far from it, but those who know and love Jesus are assured of eternal life with him, which is well worth any trouble we might face because of our faith. Jesus holds the power of life and death in his hands, and this day, he chose to show the people his power. Fear gripped them because only God has that kind of power, and they knew He was standing before them in the person of Jesus.
Pictured is where the Apostle Paul was buried. He was beheaded by Nero in Rome, but taken outside the city to be buried. Of course, there is now a Catholic Church there.
