What does “sword” mean in the Bible? When I hear that word, I think of the sword of the Spirit, the double-edged sword coming out of the mouth of Jesus, and the word of God able to cut between soul and spirit and joint and marrow.

and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, Ephesians 6:17

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrew 4:12

From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. Revelation 19:15

If that’s the case, then when Revelation speaks of the first beast cutting down the saints with a sword, why should we worry? Mere words! The beast is given authority to open its mouth “to utter blasphemies against God.” The battle we are or will fight is a war of words, but we have “the Word” and will conquer the beast because our “Word” has the power to overcome. We must maintain our faith and endure! We can do this!

If anyone is to be taken captive, to captivity he goes; if anyone is to be slain with the sword, with the sword must he be slain. Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints. Revelation 13:10
