I find it interesting that in this next chapter, 2 Corinthians 8, Paul encouraged the Corinthians to give as the Macedonians gave. It is the time of year that many feel charitable, and to help relieve a portion of their tax burden, they give generously, though we should often give to help those in need, especially those in our church. However, if you pour your tithes and offerings into your church throughout the year, you won’t need to make a substantial donation at the year’s end to make up for it.
Jesus set the example of giving. He gave everything. Though rich, he came as a poor man to earth and left as a poor man; he gave his entire body to save us. The least we could do is pay into the church, which, in turn, gives to those in need and to missionaries who are spreading the gospel and starting churches throughout the world, much like Paul. During that time, many gave out of their poverty, expecting God to bless them. We should have the same confidence. God is so good, and He will bless you in abundance if you are willing to give even when you lack. Trust God; He is faithful.
Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia; How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves; 2 Corinthians 8:1-3
